Boitshepo "Bibi" Giyose, class of 1989, discusses the nutritional challenges in her native Africa - which range from people dying from hunger and malnutrition in some countries, to people battling obesity in more westernized areas. As senior food and nutrition security advisor for the African Union's New Partnership for Africa's Development, she coordinates nutrition activities and provides policy direction for the entire continent.
Suzanne H. Freeman began her career at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte as a nurse in 1975. Now, she is president of the 861-bed hospital. Freeman discusses the challenges facing health care: a record number of underinsured North Carolinians, and increasing shortages of nurses, radiologists and pharmacy professionals.
Former broadcaster Cullie Tarelton talks about his priorities as a state representative in the North Carolina General Assembly, including education, health care and the economy. Rep. Tarleton lives in Blowing Rock and was elected to office in November 2006. He represents Ashe and Watauga counties.
